Sony and FIFA have teamed up to bring next year's second-biggest sporting event in 3D exclusively to those who truly appreciate the beautiful game. Read: not Americans. Sony will be lugging its 3D cameras to South Africa next year to film up to 25 World Cup matches. It marks a big commitment to a technology they're pushing hard, and comes on the heels of Panasonic's similar plans for a 3D Winter Olympics. More importantly, an accompanying 3D Blu-ray disc of match highlights will be released later next year that should play to the format's strengths. It'll also give you a chance to wear some fugly glasses.
The selected games will be broadcast live at "Fan Fest" locations in seven cities around the world: London, Berlin, Mexico City, Paris, Rio De Janeiro, Rome, and Sydney. Sorry US soccer fans! If you'd only bought more Didier Drogba jerseys. [Fifa via TechRadar, Image via New Scientist]

CES: RealD signs big names for 3D TV

vuzix_glasses_300x100.jpg

RealD, a company whose 3D display technology already is widely used in movie theaters, has enlisted a raft of prominent partners for the TV industry: Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, JVC, Samsung, and DirecTV.

xpand_glasses_2.jpg

RealD, which uses polarized light to separate imagery for the left and right eyes, isn't the only contender for 3D technology. XpanD, which uses liquid crystal to briefly make one side or the other of its eyewear briefly opaque, announced a 3D partnership with Vizio.
XpanD also announced a range of X102 and X103 glasses in various colors. XpanD uses Bluetooth to synchronize the glasses' behavior with the imagery on the TV screen.
And if you want to sidestep the whole issue of 3D displays, you can try Vuzix's Wrap 920AR stereo display glasses, which build two separate 1504x480-pixel displays into the glasses themselves to create stereoscopic vision. The glasses monitor position and orientation so a person's view can be adjusted according to head position, and they have external cameras that can feed in what a person would ordinarily see without the glasses. Sounds handy for the budding concept of augmented reality.

Αφήστε τα ημίμετρα κύριοι και δώστε μας το Holodeck του Star Trek για να σας τα σκάσουμε... :flipout: :flipout:

Πφφφ... trekies...
Τι λέτε βρε; Υπάρχει καλύτερο σύστημα από το πριζάκι του Matrix;
Εκεί να δεις τσόντα να δεις πως θα μειωθούν κατά 99% ο γάμοι!

Τώρα αυτό... Να το θεωρήσω άσεμνη φωτογραφία; Θέλανε να το κάνουν έτσι; Υπονοεί κάτι ο σχεδιαστής του μικροφώνου για την τιμή που θα πουλήσει την ταινία;

DirecTV Announces at CES three 3D HD Channels coming soon

directv_a1.jpg

Last week you may have heard about DirecTV announcing a new 3D HD channel for their viewers. Today, that announcement has been confirmed as DirecTV officially announced it today. The surprise though is that they will be releasing not one, but three 3D HD channel instead. All the channels will be released before the end of the year. The company has already gotten several partners including CBS, FoxSports, HDNet, and many more. Customers will receive a free firmware update sometime in the second quarter of this year.

The leak was true. DirecTV will be launching 3 dedicated channel for 3D content within 2010. Partners include CBS, FoxSports, HDNet and more, plus DirecTV will be making their own content.
Customers with DirecTV HD boxes will receive a free firmware update in Q2 2010, making their existing systems work with future 3D HDTVs. That's all we know for now, but the backward compatibility certainly sounds good to us.
