Got my 42PX70 today, (from Multiregion Magic.)
Some thoughts. PQ seems as good as my 37PX60, (which is going to my brother.)
No fans so it is silent. There's a lot of ventilation round back and you can see the passive cooling heat sinks. (Aluminium by the looks of it.) The entire 42" panel is only slightly heavier than the 37" PX60.
The new GUI does look better and sound menu has a surround option. I quite like the styling but fingerprints show up clearly so be careful
Purple snakes issue: In my case with my 37PX60 Seven (chapters 16 & 17) were a real mess and I used that to check. Chapter 17 was fine - my postfix PX60 reduced this greatly but still had a few problems. So
However chapter 16 - staircase walls: Post-fix my 37PX60 was still a problem - better but still an ugly purple "shadow. With the PX70 there is a slight purple shadow but bear in mind I know it's there and am looking out for it. I would be very confident that watching without prior knowledge of the purple snakes you wouldn't notice anything.
Carrying on: the green test screen posted in the PV Colour Problems thread - again because I know what to look for there is hint but you have to be close to the screen to see purple. From normal seating it looks like an uneven green gradient. (However this does suggest that Panasonic still might have an issue - time will tell.)
My other "benchmark" DVDs - Superman Returns, THX contrast screen, Matrix are fine.
Finally - those who have followed the snakes from the start may recall that the first example given was in The Return of the King. (The sky next to Shelob when she is sneaking above Frodo exhibits clear fizzing purple pixels when you are close to the panel.) With the PX70 - no fizzing pixels but still a (very small) hint of purple when you are next to the screen and looking for it, (changing to warm in Cinema eliminates it completely.) At normal viewing distance everything looks fine.
In summary: if you are the kind of person who actively looks for faults - rewinding/pausing DVDs, going right upto the screen - I'm afraid in my view this TV is not for you. (I'm pretty anal when comes to things like this but I'm happy with it.)
For the rest it's an excellent value panel that has a great picture. For me the lack of fan noise is a real plus - lets hope the damn thing doesn't catch fire.
