I ordered the HR500 to fill the role of TV tuner, DVD and BluRay drive, and especially to have access to all my music from USB or Ethernet. The HR500 I also use the "VCR" thanks to its disk, but it does not drive (unlike the Panasonic DMR-780 for example).
My TV is an older model CRT, so I connected the HR500 via SCART (a SCART socket on the back, cord not included).
DVDs pass with a good quality, ditto for DTT.
Blu-Ray and HDTV pass without problem too,
but a slight aliasing is still visible.
All channels are detected easily TNT (HD or not), correctly named and classified.
I did read a dozen Blu-rays to HR500, I found one that does not read: "Gran Torino."
there are annoying slowdowns when playing DVDs. These problems are random, not reproducible with the same disc on another player. The LG support offered me a return customer service, after only 3 weeks of use ...
Anyway the HR500 is especially interesting as platinum and multimedia recorder,
the reader is already outdated, since it does not play Blu-Ray 3D.
There is only one analog audio output, stereo, good quality and I am rather demanding (test done with Denon PMA 1500R Amplifier and Cabasse speakers). For those who have a home theater amplifier, a digital output (coaxial) is this:
no optical output.
Flac format is recognized, although this is not mentioned in the manual.
CD playback TV off is possible: the keys play / pause, forward and rewind are present. Only the elapsed time is displayed.
This is the only platinum I know that does not display the number of the current track! Really not practical to browse the CD. Note that the drive tray seems very fragile, I do not let my kids touch it.
When selecting and playing mp3s, the HR500 displays the names of files:
it does not use the mp3 tags. The album art is not displayed automatically, even if the image file is in the same directory with the same name. As the mp3 tags are not used,
the track number encoded in the tags is not recognized and so the titles of an album are sorted alphabetically. To correct this we must name the mp3 with the track number first (large galley if you are many).
With a nightclub on line, it is clear that the appliance must be able to manage play lists.
No menu is devoted to play-lists, the user manual does not mention it at all. I tried to create a play list in iTunes, then export to m3u format. It must then edit the m3u file with a text editor to correct the path (in my case, delete c: \) and replace backslashes (\) with slashes (/). And it works!
The shuffle does not seem to exist is a shame for large playlists: like reading always starts at the first title, we are sure to always hear the same, and never hear the latest! It's a little void, because the functionality is basic, and present on most turntables.
The posting of albums / songs / recordings ... is a simple list of filenames. For music I like a grid with the clutch, as in itunes. With the list, click on the remote each revealed a single element: when we seek an album out of 500 is the big galley! A device like the Popcorn is much better, cheaper.
Registration is super easy (a key) and research in the recorded programs is also very simple.
The copy (or move) files from the USB to the internal hard drive (or vice versa) is also very intuitive. I copied a movie recorded by HR500, on a USB key to read it on the PC: the format is. Ts,
re-read without problem by VLC.
I did read the HR500. Avi files ripped from DVD and re-encoded with DVDFab (MPEG 2), no problem.
Ditto for rips of Blu-ray also made with DVDFab: file. M2ts is replayed.
After connecting to the Internet with the HR500 Powerline adapter he informed me of the
availability of an update, which took place without problem. It's the only way to update the firmware:
not possible from a USB key. We must still note that if an update was available from the output of HR500 in France (end May 2010), there has been none since (8/25/2010).
LG is known not to change firmware, except blatant bug.
The media server from my livebox was found automatically, I could easily read the files on a USB key plugged into the livebox.
No configuration was required.
The Ethernet port also provides access to YouTube, but
it is not possible to listen to Internet radio, which is a shame.
There is no possibility of removing the end or the beginning of a recording to remove commercials for example.
I plugged a USB hard disk (Iomega 250 GB, 2.5 inch, formatting NTFS) to the USB port on the front of HR500.
Recognized without problem, more than 500 albums (mp3, 320 kbit / s) copied in 1 hour. On a PC it takes 2 USB ports for hard drive, because of food. On HR500 does it work with a single,

The external drive can be selected (config menu) for recording. The front USB is the only one: no other outlet in the rear. It's a shame if we want to leave a disk continuously.
The remote is very long, but
well done. Note that
it may also control a TV (LG, Samsung, Goldstar ,...). The HR500 is more than 30 seconds to power up. When first switched it shows 228 GB free hard disk space, not 250 ...
In fact I read the manual out of curiosity,
but the menus are well enough made so that we can do without. I contacted LG support for answers on displaying folders, shuffle, playlists:
they do not know the product, answer completely wrong. Expect anything from there (eg they say that the playlists are not supported, while I play).
Failure to manage mp3 tags is unforgivable in 2010: one star less. Browsing through the directories of movies and music is also to review, for better ergonomics.
Playing some bluray problem, no shuffle, nullity of support ... another star in less. Cons by side "in a single device" is really great, it only lacks the FM tuner.
