That’s the message from Sony, as it launched a clutch of new Blu-ray hardware this week. In a move reminiscent of the stuttering introduction of BD-Live, Sony is rolling out players and systems described as ‛3D ready’. A firmware update later this year will ‛turn on’ three-dimensional functionality.</p><p></p><p>Key new kit is the BDP-S470 (pictured below), a step-down on the previously announced BDP-S570 player. Unlike the S470, the BDP-S570 is 3D-capable straight out of the box, with no firmware update required.</p><p></p><p>The only other difference between the S570 and S470 seems to be the inclusion of integrated Wi-Fi and 1GB of resident BD-Live memory on the higher-end model. Both the S470 and S570 boast super-fast start-up and loading times.</p><p></p><p>Feature rich</p><p>Significantly, all of Sony’s 2010 Blu-ray range are Super Audio CD compatible. The inclusion of SACD support should both surprise and delight cinephiles with existing SACD libraries.</p><p></p><p>To improve the quality of online video sources, the top-of-the-line BDP-S570 has IP content Noise Reduction. There’s also a new Entertainment Database Browser, powered by Gracenote, which allows users to browse crew and production information. The S570 is DLNA compliant, and able to stream music and video from networked sources. <strong>File support is wide and includes DivX HD and MKV formats. </strong> </p><p></p><p>If 3D isn’t your thing, Sony has the otherwise tasty BDP-S370. All of the brand’s new BD players can access content online, via Sony’s Bravia portal. In the UK this includes BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm, YouTube and Dailymotion. Stateside users can choose from around 25 providers, including Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand. </p><p></p><p>The decks can also be controlled via an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. A free App called BD Remote will not only control the players, but allow you to browse BD sleeve artwork and cast/crew/production information.
