Sony's existing Blu-ray players offered great image quality but precious little else at launch - requiring updates to add features they should have debuted with. Fortunately that sin is being repented for with the BDP-S360 and BDP-S560 which are both much more capable players right out of the box. Foremost on the amendment list is support for Profile 2.0 Blu-ray discs and all the interactive web-based content offered thereof and the S560 has the useful addition of wireless connectivity. Both players crank up audio support from their predecessors, with decoding and bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, and DTS-HD Master Audio. The S360 and S560 will upscale standard definition DVDs to 1080p, output Deep Colour content and, of course, can cope with 1080p/24 output with compatible discs. Were I feeling a little cynical I could point out this effectively brings Sony's stand-alone players in line with the PS3 several months ago - even the XMB menu system sees a transition - but the output quality will almost definitely be better on the S360 and S560 than the console can muster, so the three aren't all that comparable, really. In the US the BDP-S560 and BDP-S360 are priced at $350 and $300 respectively, so we can expect UK pricing in the £200 and £250 region at a guess. Who knows with the state of the economy right now, though? http://www.trustedreviews.com/home-cinema/news/2009/03/03/Sony-BDP-S360--BDP-S560-Blu-ray-Players-Launch/p1
