Computer HDMI connects to TV, but not AV receiver

I'm hoping this is the place to ask. I have a cheapo NUC-style pc. I think the brand is Miniforums. It was cheap on Amazon -- Celeron processor with quicksync. I mostly use it as a Plex client (home network only) and for streaming Netflix and Amazon.
The problem is when I plug the HDMI into the AV receiver (Marantz NR-1403 - cheap and basic, but lets me hear dialogue), neither the amp not the computer recognize each other. The computer plugs directly into the TV fine, and I can send the audio back to the receiver through the optical, but that just seems like a dumb workaround.
It's become urgent though since the TV just died and the backup doesn't have any multi-channel audio out. And crappy old tv speakers make me sad.
So my main question is, is there some way to "fix" the computer so it will talk to the amp? Sub questions would be how do I ensure the replacement will work? Is there a spec I should look for? Maybe it's time to just use a Firestick or Shield, but I like having a keyboard. I'll add that the fan on that computer is super loud. Really want to replace it anyway.
I'm not uptight about my home theater experience. As long as I can see it and have decent sound, I'm good. I'm not opposed to replacing anything, but would rather not. For now
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello and welcome to AVclub.

When you connect the HDMI from the PC to the Marantz do you see it at all in display properties ?
Does your nuc-style PC have a secondary display output that you can use to connect to a monitor/tv directly so you can have both the Marantz receiver connected via HDMI and another monitor/tv to be able to navigate windows in order to check what is going on ?
