PANASONIC D SERIES 2010 (LED-LCD) ( http://panasonic.net/avc/viera/us2010/product/d_lcd.html )

main_img.jpg

The D2 series introduces LED-backlight technology to the 2010 model line-up. LED-LCD uses white LEDs arranged around the inside frame of the TV along with a special diffusion panel designed to spread the light evenly behind the LCD panel. This method of backlighting the LCD panel allows for the LED-LCD HDTVs to become extremely thin and offers a wider color gamut than traditional back-lit LCDs, which use fluorescent bulbs to provide the light source. Combined with the IPS panel, the viewing angle is enhanced, contrast is also improved and there is lower power consumption. The D2 series also features the proprietary Universal Dock for iPod; the VIERA Image Viewer™ to view digital still JPEG photos with music slideshow capability; VIERA®Link™, - a technology that utilizes HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) and allows a consumer to operate all VIERA Link compatible A/V components using only the TV’s remote control; a PC input; 24p Smooth film; 120Hz Motion Picture Pro 4; four HDMI connections and Clear Panel.

Live from Panasonic's CES press event

Viera Plasma G Series. Not 3D, but still has Viera Cast WiFi and the "Infinite Black Panel."

panny-live-0070.jpg

Also leads to higher black levels: "Infinite Black Panel Pro," with 5 million to 1 contrast ratio.

panny-live-0068.jpg

All have Viera Cast WiFi with Skype capabilities. Changed the phosphor technology to be able to handle 3D -- we're guessing he's talking an improved refresh rate, something LCD hasn't had any problem with.

Viera Plasma V Series. Full HD 3D. 65, 58, 55 and 50-inch models.

All Viera Cast-compatible TVs will get Skype.

In 2010, Panasonic will release a full lineup of 3D HDTVs, 3D Blu-ray players and a 3D HD camera.

Living in America...:D

We had a bit of a connection hiccup, but we're back on track. DirecTV just announced that it will have three 3D channels this spring. There will be a live 3D broadcast to Panasonic's booth at CES this week, and you can pause and rewind 3D TV just like the regular stuff. The MLB All Stars game will be broadcast in 3D.

Panasonic is bringing a full line of 3D TVs to the market this spring

CES: Panasonic makes 3D HD official with VT25 series of plasma TVs

CES_2010_-_Image_-_Full_HD_3D_TC-P50V25_-_Compressed_610x448.jpg

The set will include one pair of glasses--every other 3D set announced at the show, save , lacks included glasses--and like all other makers Panasonic will employ an active LC shutter system. The right and left lens in the glasses alternately darkens and lightens, too quickly to perceive, while the TV synchronously displays the corresponding right- and left-eye-specific images. The result is a stereoscopic 3D effect that, in the case of the VT25 mated to full-resolution 3D content, preserves all 1920x1080 (1080p) pixels for each eye. Hence Panasonic's term "Full HD 3D."

CES_2010_-_Image_-_3D_Eyewear_3_270x217.jpg

Aside from 3D, the VT25 is separated from step-down models in Panasonic's lineup by the inclusion of Infinite Black Pro, which we assume improves upon the already excellent black level performance found on current Panasonic plasmas. The company lists the same 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio for both the Pro and non-Pro versions of the feature, however, so we'll have to wait for a review sample to see how black this latest Panasonic can get.
The VT25 also offers ISFccc, a protocol to help professional calibrators home in on the perfect picture, and an RS-232 port for custom installations.
Panasonic TC-PVT25 features:

  • 3D comatible
  • includes on pair of 3D glasses
  • Infinite Black Pro
  • ISFccc mode
  • THX certified
  • VieraCast interactive suite adds Netflix, Pandora, Twitter and Fox Sports to previous content
  • Skype video calling
  • optional wi-fi connection
Panasonic TC-PVT25 series models:

  • Panasonic Viera TC-P65VT25: 65-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P58VT25: 58-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P54VT25: 54-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P50VT25: 50-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD

Panasonic plasmas add Skype and Netflix

CES_2010_-_Image_-_VIERA_CAST_Home_Screen_610x418.jpg

The big hype for Panasonic's plasma lineup revolves around the company's 3D-compatible TC-PVT25 series, but for shoppers satisfied to see their TV shows in the traditional number of dimensions, there's the TC-PG25 series and its doppleganger, the TC-PG20 series. According to Panasonic's press kit the two are basically identical--we assume the differences are as minor as those between the G15 and G10 sets from last year--so we'll address them both here.
Panasonic's most visible improvement between those older "G" plasmas and the new ones is the inclusion of shiny new interactive services. Currently the company's VieraCast service offers Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, Picasa, Bloomberg news, and weather, but for 2010 it will also get Netflix streaming, the ability to place and receive video phone calls via Skype (more info; external speaker/camera required), and access to Pandora, Twitter and Fox Sports news. The selection brings VieraCast into the same league as the extensive interactive offerings from LG and Sony.

Panasonic_2010CES_PressConference_CNET_010610_25_610x406.JPG

To make all that content easier to access, the TV includes a pair of UBS ports that can connect to an optional wi-fi dongle and/or, in a first and welcome option among interactive TVs we've seen, an external keyboard.
But if you're a diehard plasma fan you could care less about all that interactive junk. You want to know whether Panasonic has improved the picture quality. We can't address that question until we review one, but we can point out that the company is claiming a higher contrast ratio for its so-called "Infinite Black" panel--5,000,000:1 in 2010 versus 2,000,000:1 for the 2009 models, for what it's worth--and imbuing the "G" models with THX certification. It remains to be seen whether the latter imparts the yellowish/greenish tinge we've seen on previous Panasonic THX displays.
One final note: like just about every other HDTV announced at the show, plasma or LCD, all of the Panasonic plasmas qualify for Energy Star 4.0. On one hand we do expect them to use less juice than last year's sets, but on the other we're skeptical of any program that fails to differentiate between a 65-inch plasma and an LED-based LCD. Once again, we'll have to wait for a review sample to get the full scoop.

Panasonic TC-PG25/TC-PG20 features:

  • Infinite Black panel
  • THX certified
  • VieraCast interactive suite adds Netflix, Pandora, Twitter and Fox Sports to previous content
  • Skype video calling
  • optional wi-fi connection

Panasonic TC-PG25 series models:

  • Panasonic Viera TC-P54G25: 54-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P50G25: 50-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P46G25: 46-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P42G25: 42-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD

Panasonic TC-PG20 series models:

  • Panasonic Viera TC-P54G20: 54-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD
  • Panasonic Viera TC-P50G20: 50-inch, available spring 2010, price TBD

Like the other members of the 2010 Panasonic VIERAHDTV line the C2 series contains no lead or mercury in the panel and the TVs have a lifespan of 100,000 hours.

Panasonic Introduces LED-Backlight Technology To Its 2010 Expanded Viera® LCD Line

Panasonic Corporation of North America, an industry and technology leader in the HDTV arena, introduced LED-backlight models to its expanded 2010 line of VIERA® LCD HDTVs at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show.

Panasonic's top of the line VIERA LED-LCD D2 series features two 1080p Full HD models - TC-L37D2, a 37-inch class (37" measured diagonally) HDTV and the TC-L42D2, a 42-inch class (41.6" measured diagonally) HDTV. The LED method of backlighting the LCD panel allows for the HDTVs to become extremely thin and offers a wider color gamut than traditional back-lit LCDs, which use fluorescent bulbs to provide the light source. Combined with the IPS panel, the viewing angle is improved, contrast is also improved and there is lower power consumption. The D2 series also features the proprietary Universal Dock for iPod®; the VIERA Image Viewer(TM) to view digital still JPEG photos; VIERA Link(TM), a technology that utilizes HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) and allows a consumer to operate all VIERA Link(TM) compatible A/V components using only the TV's remote control; a PC input; 24p Smooth film; 120Hz motion picture Pro 4; four HDMI connections and Clear Panel.

PANASONIC INCREASES COMMITMENT TO VIERA® LCD HDTVS
