Live from Samsung's CES 2010 press conference

-LCD 750 and PDP 7000 3D plasma. The plasma is 1.7 inches thick. Wonder if we'll get a black level bake off here.

-LED 7000 -- features Touch of Color design in "Mystic Earth." The base looks like something out of Battlestar Galactica.

-LED 8000 series, with a new backlight -- blacker blacks, and it looks pretty even to us.

-9000-series, not 5000. The remote is a touchscreen that does QWERTY, and when you're watching a BD on the TV you can watch on the remote. Rock.

-Brushed metal bezel, sliding auto sensor that detects when the user is close and slides out the controls.

-5000 series LED -- width of a pencil. 0.3-inches.

-They're going to do real-time 2D-3D conversion, 3D LED, 3D LCD, 3D plasmas.

-Announcing a total 3D solution: 3D TV, 3D BD deck, 3D home theater system... and "light and comfortable active shutter glasses.

-First TV apps in spring, "premium apps" in summer. One hint about the dev program: "open."

-Presenting Samsung Apps, the first multi-device app store. Apps on the phone, TV, Blu-ray players.

Samsung unveils 3D television strategy at CES 2010

By James Wells at CES

LAS VEGAS, USA: Samsung has announced it will launch an entire suite of 3D products, which the company referred to as a 3D ecosystem.

Samsung has launched the 9000 series, 8000 series and 7000 series of LED 3D televisions, as well as LCD and plasma 3D panels and a 3D compatible Blu-ray player.

The timing of these releases to market is yet to be confirmed.

The 9000 series is the hero product in the range. It is a third of one inch thick (ca 8.4 millimetres) or the width of a pencil. This was met with broad applause from the assembled media in a packed press conference at the Venetian hotel.

The 9000 series also comes with a touchscreen remote control that provides the ability to watch live TV on the remote while the Blu-ray is on the television.

The plasma is also slim, measuring 1.4 inches in thickness (ca 3.5 centimetres).

To complement the 3D television announcements, Samsung invited Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of Dreamworks Animation, and Frederic Rose, chairman and CEO of Technicolor, to the stage for a live demonstration of 3D and the announcement of Monsters v Aliens on 3D Blu-ray.

Katzenberg observed that 3D films represented 10 of the 170 major releases in 2009 and yet they also represented 4 of the top 10 releases overall. He also claimed that 3D could deliver more profitability for movie producers and studios and help fight privacy

Samsung's 2010 LCDs & plasmas include the skinny, touchscreen remote controlled LED 900

led9000_%2855%29_r90.jpg

Samsung's just gushed its 2010 TV lineup, and chief among the troops is the 9000 series LED with built-in proprietary 3D processor and, more importantly, full support for a full color touchscreen remote control, integrated with WiFi and IR. Paired with the ultra-slim 9000 series (right), you can watch broadcast directly from the handheld and swipe it to the TV to enjoy. The 8000 and 7000 series also enjoy 3D capabilities, as does the 750 LCD set. Left out of the 3D fun? The 6500 LED and 650 LCD models -- sorry gang. All models are reportedly Energy Star 4.0 compliant and the premium ones also come with Internet@Home with apps including Netflix.

With eight product series, and screen sizes ranging from 19" to 65", this is the industry's largest lineup of LED TVs to date.

Built-in 3D
New in 2010, this year's premium models in the LED TV lineup, the 7000, 8000 and 9000, all include Samsung's proprietary built-in 3D processor and emitter that is optimized for, and enables compatibility with multiple 3D standards including half and full HD resolution formats as well as the Blu-ray Disc Association approved "Blu-ray 3D" standard. In addition, Samsung's 3D system delivers a picture using a full color spectrum for an unbelievable, immersive viewing experience.

Connected TV and Samsung Apps
With built-in Ethernet connection and wireless-ready capabilities, the 2010 LED TV lineup is ready to meet the growing consumer demand for "content without borders." The upgraded Internet@TV feature now includes Samsung Apps, providing consumers with an expanded, easy to navigate selection of content and applications from leading services like Accedo Broadband, AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV, Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Rovi, Travel Channel, Twitter, USA TODAY, and Vudu. Applications can be downloaded and viewed all while watching TV. All of the premium LED TVs, 6500 Series and above, will include the upgraded Internet@TV with Samsung Apps.

Unsurpassed Picture Quality

Samsung's premium LED TV's will boast unsurpassed picture quality by using a Samsung-developed technology that merges the advantages of LED edge-lighting with the control of local dimming technology in directly back-lit LED televisions. This technology along with Samsung's high-efficiency LED light source and proprietary picture enhancement engine with video processor ensure unsurpassed picture quality with vibrant colors, deep blacks and better contrast ratios.

Focus on Design
In 2010, Samsung builds on its tradition of innovative design by introducing narrower bezels and brushed metal frames in silver and black– pushing the limits beyond the familiar black bezels of many HDTV's. In particular, Samsung developed a groundbreaking four-legged quad stand that makes the TV look more like furniture than device and a new "mystic earth" Touch of Color™ (ToC™) design scheme with chrome edging to better match a living room's décor. With a wide-ranging pallet of materials and designs, Samsung offers something for virtually anyone's tastes and interior design preferences. What's more, the new LED TVs match Samsung's 2010 line of Blu-ray players and home theater systems bringing a cohesive element to a home entertainment room.

Green Design
All these functionalities are delivered without compromising on the energy efficiency that Samsung LED TVs are known for and meet even higher standards of sustainability. They all exceed the more stringent EnergyStar® 4.0 guidelines. Samsung LED TVs are the highest performing and eco-conscious HDTV products Samsung has ever released, continuing to set new standards every year.

Redefining the Remote
In another industry first, Samsung developed an easy to use on-board TV display full touch-screen remote control. The remote's color touch-screen makes understanding features and options easy and simple. Its integrated Wi-Fi and infrared technology controls TV and AV devices with the on-screen buttons and QWERTY keyboard. It allows users to watch broadcast content directly on the remote so you can watch the first part of the big game, while a Blu-ray movie is just wrapping up on the large screen HDTV(9000 Series only). You can also browse music, photos, and video files from a DLNA certified PC then swipe the chosen content in the direction of the TV to enjoy on the larger screen (9000 Series only). The remote is the primary remote control for the 9000 Series and a derivative version of it is sold separately as an option for other LED TV models including the 7000 and 8000 Series.

LED 9000

Samsung's LED LCD televisions are here and the flagship 9000 is a doozy. It's the only one they're calling "ultra thin", has 3D support in late 2010 and a touch remote that shows you content from other video sources!

The thinness (it's as skinny as a pencil) is achieved by shoving lots of guts into the pedestal, which doubles as a wall mount. The set can convert 2D content into 3D, although I'm sure of dubious quality. The remote looks rather Apple-ish in UI, but it can show you, as I said before, content from other sources, like live TV while watching a Blu-ray on the big screen. It has 240Hz tech, which we've never noticed as important in image quality, but it's there (needed for 3D). No word on sizes or prices, yet. There's Samsung app support, but platforms like these are never really well supported. The frame is very shiny.

LED 8000

8000 Series: Not as thin as the 9000, it uses edge lit technology and has what Samsung claims is the advantage of backlighting with localized dimming. 240Hz. No prices or sizes. 3D, and treatment to upconvert 2D to 3D. Samsung apps.

LED 7000

7000 Series: No edgelit with localized dimming advantages as in the 8000. 240Hz. No prices or sizes. 3D, and treatment to upconvert 2D to 3D. Samsung apps. "Touch of Color" translucent frame from last year, with a new 4 legged stand

6500 Series: 120Hz, "touch of color" finish. DLNA streaming capabilities. Apps. No 3D. No prices or sizes. Coming the first half of 2010, unlike the above which are coming in "2010".
5000 Series: Focus on low power usage, including a low power monitor. DLNA, and USB port media playback.

PX2370-Back_540x385.JPG

One of the most unique features is the proximity sensor which automatically turns the monitor off when no one is near it. Kind of creepy, but cool.
Some of the other key specs of the PX2370.

  • 18mm design
  • 5,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio (Static Contrast Ratio 1000:1)
  • 2ms (GTG) video response time
  • Analog RGB/DVI/HDMI inputs
  • 1920x1080 resolution
The PX2370 will be available in April from Samsung resellers at a price of $369.

CES: Samsung plasma thinner but adds an extra dimension

PDP7000_%28NA,58%29_FRONT_610x457.JPG

PDP7000_%28NA,58%29_L90_270x202.jpg

The set is compatible with multiple 3D standards including both half- and full-resolution 3D, as well as the Blu-ray Disc Association's "Blu-ray 3D" standard.

The PNC7000 also boasts a 1.4-inch depth, rivaling the slimness of some LED-based LCDs. It's still the thinnest plasma announced at the show, although Panasonic's expensive Z1 from last year is thinner at an inch.
Like most other Samsung models in 2010 the PNC7000 will also offer the company's interactive feature suite, anchored by Internet @ TV (i.e. Yahoo widgets) and Samsung Apps. The widgets should operate similarly to last year's models (although hopefully they're less sluggish now), while the Apps are Samsung's new proprietary content portal. As of now, it's not perfectly clear exactly how it will work; Samsung says that the first free apps will launch in the spring, with premium apps following in the summer. There's no word yet as to whether services like Netflix and Vudu will be free or premium apps. With other TV makers (like LG and Sony) offering the same functionality for free, we expect it will be difficult to charge a premium for standard streaming media apps like Netflix.

Samsung PNC7000 features:

  • 3D comatible
  • 2D to 3D conversion system
  • slim 1.4-inch deep panel
  • Interactive capability with Samsung Internet @ TV and Samsung Apps
Samsung didn't specify screen sizes for the PNC7000 series, nor did it list pricing or availability beyond saying simply "2010."

Samsung's flagship plasma delivers "Real Black" filter

PDP8000_%28NA,50%29_FRONT_610x457.jpg

Hauntingly similar to the Tru Black filter advertised on LG's PK750 and PK950 models, the Real Black filter on Samsung 8000 is said to "reduce the onscreen glare caused by ambient light, so blacks and shadow details are as crisp and defined as possible." We're looking forward to comparing this set to the LG, as well as to Panasonic's 2010 models.
On other extra separates the 8000 from Samsung's less-expensive plasmas: dejudder processing, which appeared in a couple 2008 plasmas but not in any from last year. Samsung calls the effect Motion Judder Canceller (MJC), and in any case we expect videophiles to leave it turned off. The 8000 is also compatible with 1080p/24 material, much like the company's 2009 models.

Samsung PNC8000 features:

  • Real Black filter
  • dejudder processing
  • slim 1.4-inch deep panel
  • 3D comatible
  • 2D to 3D conversion system
  • Interactive capability with Samsung Internet @ TV and Samsung Apps
Samsung didn't specify screen sizes for the PNC8000 series, nor did it list pricing or availability beyond saying simply "2010."

Samsung LNC750 series boasts 240Hz and Interactive "apps," but no LED

LCD750-%2846,NA%29_Front_610x457.jpg

Our favorite LCD TV from last year, despite the fact that it didn't include LED backlighting, was the Samsung LNB750 series. The successor to that model, which again represents the company's highest-end non-LED series, is the LNC750. Judging from the specs Samsung didn't do much to change this set. It still includes 240Hz processing and the company's glossy screen coating, which it calls "Ultra Clear." The main external difference is the addition of a slick quad-leg stand.
Internally, the company has upped the interactive ante for 2010. The company's interactive feature suite still includes Internet @ TV (i.e. Yahoo widgets) and adds Samsung Apps.

Samsung LNB750 features:

  • 240Hz refresh rate
  • Interactive capability with Samsung Internet @ TV and Samsung Apps
Samsung didn't specify screen sizes for the LNC750 series, nor did it list pricing or availability beyond saying simply "1st half of 2010."
